What Is Cross Selling and Why Should You Use It?

In this article I am going to discuss how to increase your sales by using cross selling. I shall describe what it is and how to use it effectively in your marketing efforts.
Cross selling is where you have a product let's call it Product A and when someone has placed the order you then offer a similar priced product that is related to product A. Let's call it product B.
The reason why people use this is because once someone has made a decision to buy they are in a buying frame of mind. If you offer them something else that is related and that they might also need they are more likely to purchase because they are in that buying mode.
Therefore you can potentially increase your sales revenue by cross selling.
I would recommend that you test this out in your particular niche with your customers to see if it increases your sales. However, don't overdo it. If every product has some kind of a cross sell then I believe you will begin to put people off because it just looks as if you are selling too aggressively.
This is something that you can do every now and again. If you know that another similarly priced product might be of benefit to someone purchasing product A then offer it.
This type of selling technique is also seen in the off-line world. For example, suppose you purchase a new TV. It is likely that the shop assistant will suggest that you might like to purchase some type of insurance cover for the TV. It's not absolutely necessary but it would be of benefit to you if you did.
However, how do you feel when this happens every time you purchase something? This has been my own experience in some stores and it begins to annoy me and I immediately turn off and say no without thinking too much about it!
So be careful, as the last thing you want to do is it annoy your customers! Also you don't want them to turn off their buying frame of mind because they are expecting some sort of offer. So once in a while is best.
If this type of selling works offline then it will work just as well online. Just make sure that your product B is related to product A and will be of benefit to the purchaser.
